YOUTH ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

YEP ClassThe purpose of the Youth Enrichment Program (YEP), sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardener Program, is to help 2nd grade students learn about plants, how they grow, how seeds are spread and what plants provide for us. The presentation is done with the aid of posters, a puppet named “Herbie” (our pretend bean that grows), root viewers (a clear plastic cup in which students plant 5 different seeds). The Master Gardener team role plays how a seed grows. Each presentation lasts one hour and is designed to supplement the unit the teachers present on plants. The program was begun in 1995 in a couple of classrooms in Sequim. The program proved so successful that in just two years the program was presented to all 2nd grade classrooms in the entire Clallam County. The presentation is done with two teams. Each team does two presentations a week starting the first week in March and finishing by the first week in May.

In 2011, we visited 30 classrooms and made root viewers with 642 second grade students.

Thanks
